Mapping the Social Graph

Posted by Taus June 01, 2010

I missed Robert Kieffer’s post back in March on this. And, I find it so interesting that I thought it’d be worth sharing again…

Among other things, FanPageAnalaytics.com maps the connections of some 200 million Facebook user profiles and illustrates the “thickness” of those networks between various cities. For example, here is a map of Bend’s social network demonstrating the wide connections ranging from Los Angeles to Seattle.

You can also find other interesting connections for groups, famous people, etc. Who knew that Vermont has the highest per capita number of Jerry Garcia fans in the country?

Central Oregon Economic Forecast

Posted by Taus January 22, 2010

CodeBenders is a sponsor of the Central Oregon Economic Forecast project. The group exists to help build a sustainable economic future for Central Oregon, including the development of a cohesive tech community. So, we’re happy to participate and we want to help spread the word about the forecast conference, which is happening next week at the Tower.

Last year’s event was very informative and I expect this year will be even better. It’s not too late to get tickets, so if you’re interested you can check out the event details and order tickets here.

Bend CSA is Live

Posted by Taus December 26, 2009

File this under “Make Local Habit”…

I met a couple of college students that were starting a CSA here in Bend. They were handing out leaflets at the market to build some interest and see if they could get enough families to support a weekly drive over the Cascades to bring back local, organic produce.

So I jumped at the chance to help. Just a short while later, we had a a Facebook group going and WordPress site up and running. Between the two, we’ve got over 100 people that have expressed interest. We’re still sort of in beta on the site and planning a more robust member management system. But for now, it’s looking pretty good.

Check out Bend CSA and if you live in the area sign up!
